The Portuguese newspaper 24 Horas claimed that a team of three detectives will travel to Britain later this week to hand over a formal request for the interviews.
Leicestershire police yesterday refused to comment on the development and the McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell was unavailable for comment.
As well as the McCanns, the so-called Tapas Nine include Dr Russell O'Brien, 36, and his partner Jane Tanner, 37; Dr Matthew Oldfield, 37, and his wife Rachel, 36, a recruitment consultant; Dr David Payne, 41, a cardiovascular researcher, and his 34-year-old wife Fiona, and Fiona's mother Dianne Webster.
According to the newspaper, the Portuguese have "hundreds" of questions they want to ask. Among them, these 14 will surely be of the utmost importance.
